Wipers that don’t park in the right place, stop halfway across the windshield, or have rain sensor problems are common. In many cases, you don’t need a new wiper blade or a new motor. A simple reset can fix the problem.
Knowing how to reset windshield wipers helps auto parts stores, installers, and distributors solve customer problems faster, avoid unnecessary returns, and offer better service.
This article covers three common situations: resetting the normal park position, fixing wipers that stop halfway, and recalibrating rain-sensing wipers.
The wipers park too high on the windshield.
The wipers won’t return to the bottom.
The park position is wrong after every use.
On most vehicles, the wipers will return to the correct park position. This process lets the system relearn the motor’s home position.
If the problem is still there, check for other causes, such as frozen blades, worn linkage, a faulty relay, or mechanical damage.
The wipers stop in the middle while working.
They won’t return to the park position.
The motor seems to stop before finishing one full cycle.
Step 1–Turn Off the Ignition
Turn the ignition off right away. This stops the motor and helps avoid more damage.
Step 2–Move the Wiper Arm Back
Carefully move the windscreen wiper arm back to its normal park position by hand. Don’t force it.
Step 3–Restart the System
Turn the ignition back on. Set the wipers to Low or Medium speed and let them complete one full cycle. In many cases, the motor will relearn the correct park position.
For professional installers, if this happens after replacing the wiper motor or linkage, the problem may be mechanical. The linkage may be installed incorrectly or out of alignment. Some vehicles also require a diagnostic tool to complete the calibration.
Auto wipers do not work.
The wipers don’t respond correctly to rain.
Wiper speed doesn’t match the amount of rain.
Step 1–Clean the Sensor Area
Clean the windshield around the rain sensor. Remove any water spots, dirt, stickers, dashcam brackets, or anything blocking the sensor.
Step 2–Restart the Vehicle
Turn the ignition off, then start the vehicle again. This lets the system read the rain sensor again.
Step 3–Reset the Sensitivity
Set the wiper switch to AUTO mode. Turn the sensitivity to the lowest setting first, then adjust it to the level you want.
Different vehicles use different reset methods. On some models, you need to switch the car wipers between AUTO, OFF, and AUTO several times after starting the vehicle.
If the standard method doesn’t work, check the owner’s manual or service information.
Rain sensors work by detecting light reflected through the windshield. After replacing the windshield or disconnecting the sensor, recalibration is often needed. After resetting, test the system with one wipe cycle to make sure it is working properly.
