How to Remove Different Types of Windshield Wiper Blades

Many car owners are often confused when facing the various wiper interface forms when they replace their windshield wipers for the first time. To help car owners better understand how to replace windshield wipers, this article details the replacement steps for wipers with different interfaces, including the hook arm and pin arm, top lock, etc.

Hook Arm Wiper Blades

Hook-style wiper arms are among the most common and straightforward to remove.

Steps:

1. Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it locks in the upright position.

2. Locate the small tab or button where the blade connects to the hook.

3. Press or pull the release tab while sliding the wiper blade downward to unhook it.

4. Once released, pull the blade out of the hook and remove it completely.

Pin Arm Wiper Blades

Pin-style wiper arms use a small pin to hold the blade in place.

Steps:

1. Lift the wiper arm up and locate the locking mechanism around the pin.

2. Some designs have a small clip or button you need to push to release the blade.

3. Slide the blade off the pin by pulling it outward.

4. Ensure you handle the arm carefully to avoid it snapping back onto the windshield.

Bayonet Arm Wiper Blades

Bayonet arms have a flat, narrow metal strip that slides into the wiper blade fitting.

Steps:

1. Lift the wiper arm and locate the locking tab at the base of the blade.

2. Press the tab while gently pulling the wiper blade out of the bayonet slot.

3. Slide the blade outward until it completely detaches from the arm.

Side Lock Wiper Blades

Side-lock arms have a locking mechanism that keeps the blade securely attached.

Steps:

1. Identify the release button or clip located on the side of the wiper blade connection.

2. Press the button or lift the clip while gently sliding the blade out of the side-lock slot.

3. Once loose, pull the blade away from the arm carefully.

Top Lock Wiper Blades

Top-lock wiper arms secure the blade from above.

Steps:

1. Find the locking mechanism on the top of the blade attachment.

2. Press the release button or push the tab upwards.

3. Slide the blade outward while keeping the arm steady.
